Guidelines for Salon Process

During the Salon
Given the number of participants, the hour and a half we have in synchrony, in person & via web conference, is short.  Brevity is of virtue.  Our goal is to accomplish what is best done when we're all in conference together, and to defer detailed efforts for off-line collaboration.

2 Minute Rule:
We will work by the 2 minute rule - if any topic requires more than 2 minutes, it will be taken off line so the participants can report back to the whole its outcome.

Enable All to Participate:
In order to enable all to participate the gathering will utilize a talking circle format.  That is, at each element of the agenda we will take turns in order around the room/web until all have been heard.  After the round, there may, at the moderator's discretion in light of the available time, be an opportunity for open conversation.
  • The table will be covered with paper, enabling those listening to jot notes and frame ideas.  The chat section of the live meeting site will be available to those online.
  • If you're bursting at the seams with an idea, write it down & wait your turn.
  • Do your best to just listen and keep notes of your thoughts, avoiding interrupting the speaker (some folk are shy, and it's hard enough to say complicated simple things).
Documentation of the Process:
MDA will keep notes of the jist of the discourse with special attention to any succinct ideas and potential actions / products that might arise.
  • These notes will be posted on this site for the benefit of those not able to participate in the gathering, and to drive follow-up among the whole.
  • Participants are encouraged to suggest refinements to the notes, as well as to post links, comments and attachments to the notes page as part of the follow-up process

Beverages and snacks will be served before, during and after the gatherings.  Those participating remotely are encouraged to refresh themselves.  It doesn't count as drinking alone.
